The Committee published its first Standard in recent times in August 2005, AS 60204.1 Safety of Machinery-Electrical Equipment of Machines Part 1: General Requirements. Committee EL-017 had become inactive in the 1990s and its Standard, AS 1543-1985, was withdrawn by the Electrotechnology Standards Sector Board, as being out of date and overtaken by more recent International (IEC) Standards, However, the significance of the topic, as evidenced by the European machinery safety directive, was such that a national replacement of AS 1543 was needed, and for this purpose Committee EL-017 was re-established in 2004.
