BUSINESS PERFORMANCE TOOLS are a new product being trialed by Standards Australia targeted at small businesses. The project to develop these tools is part of the small to medium sized (SME) business initiative that aims to change the message for businesses from conformance to performance. It involves developing short concise documents that outline better practice for many of the processes used by a typical small business. These business performance tools also contain guidance on how the concepts from many of the management system Standards developed by Standards Australia can be applied to a given business process. According to James Thomson, Projects Manager for Committee MB-013, Small to Medium Enterprises: "Many small businesses associate the brand of Standards Australia with conformance and prescription so this project is an ideal opportunity to show how Standards can be used for improving business performance at a process level.
