Isolation of Proteus mirabilis from aborted pig fetuses.

A piggery unit in a sheep farm in Chinnasalem showed poor reproductive performance, abortion, infertility and abscess (Tamil Nadu, India, date not given). Heart blood swabs from two aborted fetus from a pig with same history were collected for bacteriological examination and drug susceptibility testing. Bacteriological culture on blood agar produced greyish colonies and biochemical tests identified the organism as Proteus mirabilis. Antibiogram revealed resistance to ampicillin, amoxicillin, chloramphenicol, furazolidone, cephalexin, gentamicin and tetracycline. The isolate was susceptible to ciprofloxacin.
