Seminal characteristics of the swamp buffaloes of Assam.

The aim of this study was to collect and evaluate semen from swamp buffalo bulls maintained and controlled under intensive system of management in Assam, India. Six swamp buffaloes were used in this study. Semen samples (N=30) were collected twice a week from September 2005 to January 2006 for evaluation. After examining the semen results showed that the average ejaculate volume of the swamp buffalo was 1.95+or-0.16 ml (ranging from 0.9 to 2.6 ml). Average mass activity of buffalo semen was recorded at 3.12+or-0.13. With regards to sperm motility average was 69.17+or-1.30. Sperm concentration was at 968.88+or-104.87x106 with 78.25+or-2.04% livability of sperm. Some sperms showed abnormalities at 11.98+or-1.71%.
