COMPARATIVE HISTOLOGICAL STUDIES ON THE THIRD EYELID OF GOAT AND SHEEP

The third eyelid consisted of a membrane, cartilage and nictitating gland in goat and sheep. The pigmented stratified squamous epithelium with goblet cells lined the membrane in both the species but surface cells were taller and less flat in sheep. Tunica propria contained lymphocytes in both the species, lymph nodules in goat and diffuse lymphoid aggregations in sheep. The cartilage was hyaline with a prominent perichondrium. Harderian gland was absent, whereas nictitating gland was present, which was tubuloalveolar and mixed (seromucous) in nature.
