Effect of three farrowing systems on body weight changes and feed intake in sows during lactation period.

18 crossbred (Landrace x desi) primiparous gilts (in group of 6) were utilized to study the effect of three housing systems viz. conventional farrowing pen (CFP), farrowing pen with guard rails (FPGR) and Farrowing crate (FC) on body weight changes and feed intake during lactation period of 28 days. There was significant effect of housing accommodation type on total lactation weight loss. Compared to FC (20.50+or-2.14 kg) and CFP (18.17+or-3.17 kg), sows in FPGR (9.50+or-2.11) loss less weight. Effect of housing system on voluntary feed intake during lactation period was non-significant.
