STUDIES ON THE EFFECT OF ATROPINE - KETAMINE WITH AND WITHOUT XYLAZINE IN CANINES

Ketamine hydrochloride induc-esanaesthesisa and amnesia by functional disruption (dissociation) of the CNS, through marked CNS stimulation or induction of a cataleptoid state. Effect of xylazine as preanaesthetic is presented in this paper. Materialsand Methods : Ten healthy adult mongral dogs, of either sex, with body weight ranging from 15 to 20 Kg were included in the study. They were divided into two groups of five dogs each. The dogs were not fed for 12 hours and water was withheld four hours before the start of the experiment. Atropine sulphate was given to all the animals, in order to control salivation, at the dose rate of 0.07 mg/kg. Ketamine was admin-istrated at the dose of 10 mg/kg intravanously in group-1. While in group 2 xylazine was given at the dose of 1 mg/kg intramuscularly as a preanaesthetic agent 20 minutes prior to administration of ketamine at the dose of 10 mg/kg i.v.
