This study was conducted to determine the efficacy of sandwich ELISA and standard SDS-PAGE in detecting Rotaviruses in faecal samples of piglets. 157 faecal samples were collected from diarrhoeic piglets, 0-2 months old, and were subjected to sandwich ELISA and SDS-PAGE. Results revealed that out of 157 samples 68 (43.31%) and 61 (38.85%) were positive in ELISA and SDS-PAGE, respectively, but were insignificantly different. All samples found positive in SDS-PAGE were also positive in ELISA, but few samples (7) found positive in ELISA were negative in SDS-PAGE. SDS-PAGE could show the group of Rotaviruses with clustered arrangement of gene segments for convenient analysis of genomic diversity and heterogeneity. It is suggested that sandwich-ELISA is fast and effective in screening large numbers of samples in a short time, while SDS-PAGE can be used to identify the type or group of Rotaviruses infecting the animals.
