Performance appraisal climate of Organizations: an influencing factor for overall job satisfaction of extension personnel

Performance appraisal is a useful instrument for increasing motivation, improving job performance and developing the worth of extension personnel. There is a great degree of dissatisfaction among agricultural extension personnel with current performance appraisal systems. This study was aimed towards discovering the influence of the performance appraisal climate (PAC) over job satisfaction of extension personnel. It was undertaken in the State Department of Agriculture, Haryana (INDIA) and two Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) in the state of Haryana (INDIA). The majority of extension personnel perceived the existing PAC as below average or poor and were not very satisfied with their jobs. The PAC1 was found to be significantly related with jobsatisfaction of extension personnel. Nine of the twelve PAC dimensions showed significant relationship with the job satisfaction of extension personnel. Four PAC dimensions viz. 'participation', 'reward & support system', 'performance standard' and 'criteria relevance' together explained more than sixty per cent of total variation in overall job satisfaction.
