Adverse reactions: Safety of the long-acting beta_2-agonist salmeterol in patients with severe bronchial obstruction

Salmeterol is a selective beta_2-stimulant claimed to have long-lasting (>12 hrs) relaxant effects on bronchial smooth muscle. Due to widespread suspicion of tachyphylaxis induced by such agents [1-4] and some evidence that they might be misused [5], all individuals given this drag in Norway were registered during the years 1992-94 when salmeterol was first introduced onto the market.
