The cost of production is the most critical issue in determining the net income for a cotton grower. Prices may be high, as they were in September/October 2010, but it does not mean anything to a cotton producer if the cost of production is also high.The Technical Information Section of the ICAC updates a cost of production survey every three years. The ICAC Coordinating Agencies are the primary sources of information from most member countries. In some cases, data were received from other government sources, particularly from non-member countries. In the case of ICAC member governments, as well as all countries than participated in previous surveys, the same agencies have provided data for the survey. Since 1991, the same questionnaire has been used to collect information. The survey questioimaire has been designed to cover all inputs and operations involved in producing, harvesting and giiming cotton, but there still could be some operations that are not covered in the survey questionnaire. Respondents have an option to include operations/inputs not listed in the questionnaire under 'others', and many countries do so.
