An Experiment In Ginseng

Jeanette DeDecker finds the ginseng aspect of their farm an interesting addition to tobacco, and a challenging experiment for her, and her family. Jeanette and Rick DeDecker came to a crossroad roughly five years ago for their La Salette, Ontario farm. The decision had to be made whether to expand their tobacco production or explore new crops. "We were debating about buying more tobacco quota when we thought we'd try ginseng," says DeDecker. The notion to grow ginseng has been with DeDecker since her youth. She recalls tobacco workers from the Waterford area advising her father to plant the lucrative herb. "Ginseng was already big in that area then, but our farm was devoted to tobacco."
