Thirty hybrids, developed between DS-5 GMS line and 30 male parents of Asiatic cotton, were evaluated in Haryana, India during 1993-94 under 6 environments to study the economic heterosis for plant height; number of monopods and sympods; number of bolls per plant; boll weight; seed and lint indexes; and seed cotton yield. None of the hybrids exhibited stable heterosis over all environments for all traits studied. However, DS-5 x HD 305 and DS-5 x C 402 showed significant heterotic effects against DS-5 (control) in all 6 environments; whereas DS-5 x B 32, DS-5 x HD 167, DS-5 x HD 273, DS-5 x Climiniless-2, DS-5 x Coconada white, DS-5 x N 43 and DS-5 x GCD 158 exhibited significant standard heterosis in 5 environments. DS-5 x HD 167, DS-5 x HD 305,DS-5 x C 402 and DS-5 x Coconada white registered highest heterotic effects ( > 40%) for seed cotton yield when measured over the mean of all environments.
