KHRS-21 (KHP-9) - a new high yielding rice variety for lowlands in hill zone of Karnataka.

The performance of KHRS-21, a rice cultivar developed from the cross between Intan and IET-7191, was evaluated in Mudigere, Karnataka, India, during the kharif seasons of 1999-2003. KHRS-21 showed greater plant height (115-120 cm), panicle length (21.3 cm) and 1000-grain weight (25.1 g) than Hemavathi and Intan. KHRS-21 matured later (by 5-10 days) and had a higher average grain yield (by 32 and 34%) than Intan and Hemavathi. In farmer field trials conducted in 4 districts in the hilly zone of Karnataka, KHRS-21 registered a 14% increase in grain yield over Hemavathi. Blast [caused by Pyricularia oryzae] was also not observed in plants of KHRS-21 grown in Mudigere, Sirsi and Ponnampet.
