A bold-capsuled cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum (L.) Maton) variety PV 2 - suitable for cardamom Hill Reserves of Kerala.

PV 2, a high-yielding cardamom clone with bold capsules, was selected among the open-pollinated seedlings of PV 1 developed in Pampadumpara, Kerala, India, during 1996. PV 2 was evaluated against 12 high-yielding clones and 2 controls (Green Gold and PV 1) during 1999, 2000 and 2001. The highest grain yields were recorded for PV 2 in all years (680.20, 970.0 and 1100.50 kg/ha in 1998-99, 1999-2000 and 2000-01, respectively). The dried capsules of PV 2 are ovoid to ellipsoid, and had a parrot green colour. The values of 100-capsule weight (109.75 cm3), percentage of capsules >77 mm in size (80.76%), and 100-capsule weight (38.1 g) confirm the boldness of the capsules of this clone. PV 2 is resistant to thrips, shoot and capsule borers, capsule rot and clump rot compared to Green Bold. Among PV2, Green Gold and PV 1, damage due to thrip infestation was lowest in PV 2 (16.2%) and highest in Green Gold (32.4%). Capsule borer infestation was lower in PV 1 (1.71%) than in PV 2 (3.56%) and Green Gold (9.56%). PV 2 registered the lowest levels of capsule rot (1.6%) and clump rot (1.5%), and highest ratio of alpha -terpenylacetate to 1-8-cineole (1.48) in the essential among the accessions.
