摘要

Cesar Manrique may have called himself a painter, but he was far more than that, with a career that embraced art, architecture, landscape, urban planning and sculpture. Born in 1919 at Arrecife in Lanzarote, he fought in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) under General Franco, before enrolling to study Technical Architecture, a course he never finished. Drawn towards painting, he eventually graduated as a Professor of Art.After two years in New York, he returned home in the mid 1960s with an urge to be reunited with the island's natural beauty, helping to define its development, in terms of sympathetic architecture, tourism and ecology.
