Urban woodlands: Two Christchurch gardens designed by landscape architect John Marsh are a striking blend of native plants and modern architecture

Christchurch-based landscape architect John Marsh enjoys working with native plants. He advocates the creation of urban woodlands in place of roses and annuals and recommends that we use the model of the natural landscape when designing our own gardens. It sounds interesting, but can it work in an urban setting, or is it just the dream of a designer at his drawing board? To find out, I went to see a couple of John's all-native designs. Both gardens are made to fit in with bold, modern architecture, as well as being in keeping with the environment. They are low maintenance (no dead-heading needed here) and retain their appeal through winter as well as in the warm seasons.
