The many new winter gardens planted in recent years are perhaps testament that this season need be far from dull and gloomy. This is thanks to a surprisingly wide palette of plants that have a range of special, sometimes subtle charms that would perhaps be overlooked at showier times of the year. Many offer great value during a season when anything to enjoy outdoors is welcome. Stems and evergreens give colour whatever the conditions, from the last autumn leaf drop to bud break in spring, while it isalways heartening when flowers appear, however sporadically.
