Producing masses of huge, fragrant flowers in a range of colours, brugmansias are desirable plants for the glasshouse or summer garden. LIA LEENDERTZ talks to a new National Plant Collection holder and finds out how to get the best from them. BRUGMANSIAS are plants with a big reputation. Spectacular, easy to grow and freely available, these angels' trumpets are members of the Solanaceae family, which also contains less-glamorous tomatoes and potatoes, as well as both deadly nightshade and henbane. Indeed, legends are told of Brugmansia relating to its use as a hallucinogenic in shamanic rituals in Central and South America.
