Ecological Restoration - A new emerging field for forestry? A report on the 2004 Annual Meeting of the Society for Ecological Restoration International

The Society for Ecological Restoration International is a non-profit international organization whose 2300 members are committed to the repair and management of ecosystems. Ecological restoration covers a wide range of issues, from extremely complex international efforts such as the management of biodiversity of the Columbia River basin, to the regional, such as the restoration of whitebark pine ecosystems in western Canada, and to the local, such as the introduction of tolerant trees to industriallydegraded forest ecosystems in southeastern Korea. The mission of the Society is: "to promote ecological restoration as a means of sustaining the diversity of life on Earth and re-establishing an ecologically healthy relationship between nature and culture." The Society assists restorationists by facilitating communication, promoting research and public awareness of restoration, and contributing to policy deliberations. Communications are enhanced by an annual meeting (this year in Victoria, BC), publication of the journal Restoration Ecology and a website: www.ser.org.
