INTRODUCTION:Traditionally the medical profession has used patients to tell their story and to demonstrate signs in a passive role; patients have also been used as standardised cases for tests of clinical competence. More recently, extensive use of feedback from patients has been sought on such matters as access and communication. This feedback is now ingrained in general practice remuneration through the Quality and Outcomes Framework and in the Royal College examination. The Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) document Patients Role in Healthcare - The Future Relationship Between Patient and Doctor promotes the use of patients as teachers.
