A mainstay of Chinese medicine for thousands of years, and found in many herb formulas, licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has been mostly used by Western herbalists to treat sore throat and ulcers. But a recent UCLA study has revealed that the root contains two potent inhibitors of Streptococcus mutans bacteria, a major cause of tooth decay. Cinnamon and peppermint, common ingredients in toothpaste, also prevent tooth decay by suppressing bacteria, though most people assume that the two just provideflavoring. Licorice root, considered a "harmonizer" (an herb that helps facilitate the medicinal action of other herbs), may soon find its way into popular brand toothpaste, as well. In the meantime, if you want to battle tooth decay, just swish some unsweetened licorice tea around in your mouth before swallowing.
