Gene shuffling and screening for proteins of therapeutic value

Directed evolution is a powerful approach for the improvement of any particular property of a protein with therapeutic activity. To be successful, the approach requires not only efficient recombination techniques, but also a high throughput expression and screeing platform. In this article we describe a proven directed evolution system that incorporates iterative sexual recombination and efficiently generates new and improved proteins without the prior need for knowledge of the structure.
