The modeling of industrial processes such as SRIM or RTM for manufacturing matrix polymer composite materials needs the determination of the reinforcement material permeability. Until now, composite materials were mainly concerned by small thickness parts for which the reinforcement material is characterized by a two-dimensionnal permeability. This permeability is measured by kinetics studies based on a matter front displacement observed by optical visualizations at the surface of the reinforcement material. Our work is devoted to the modeling of the manufacturing of thick composite materials parts. In this case we have to determine an additional permeability of the reinforcement material along its thickness direction. To obtain this characteristics it is convenient to follow the flow of the fluid (resin) through the volume of the reinforcement material (fiber glass mats or fabrics). The opacity of this medium involves some difficulties for the matter front observation in the bulk. This problem was solved with the help of X-ray radioscopy. We describe the experimental device we designed. Then, since an original technique is used, we propose an analytical model convenient to the mathematical treatment of our experimental results.
