When I was asked to write a retrospective on the life and career of Brian E. Conway, I thought a lot about what it was that made Brian a truly unique figure in the field of physical electrochemistry. Besides the obvious fact that he was a very major force in advancing the field during his nearly 60-year career, 1 realized that it was due at least in part to his equally strong contributions to both the "electrodics" and "ionics" sides of electrochemistry.
