Southwest Citrus Quarterly: Reflections on the career of a Budwood Bureau Chief

Charles O. Youtsey, Chief of the Citrus Budwood Registration Bureau, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services retired February 28, 1995. Charles was instrumental in the establishment of the citrus budwood foundation grove at the Southwest Florida Research and Education Center at Immokalee. In 1988 Charles Youtsey, DPI Citrus Budwood Registration Chief and Dr. David Tucker, Citrus Research & Education Center- Lake Alfred, made a visit to Immokalee to see Dr. Calvin Arnold, Director of the Southwest Florida Research & Education Center, Their visit was to discuss the possibility of establishing a citrus budwood planting in south Florida at the Immokalee Center Dr. Arnold was receptive to the idea and presented it to the Southwest FloridaIF AS Citrus Advisory Committee. The "charter group" of growers of this Citrus Advisory Committee immediately went to work and acquired the necessary support to develop a 20 acre citrus budwood grove. In the spring of 1989 the budwood grove was plantedat the Southwest Florida Research and Education Center at Immokalee. Today over a quarter million registered buds have been provided to the Florida industry through the Budwood Registration Bureau from the Immokalee grove.
