Records of Ciidae on Speyside, Scotland,including widespread Ropalodontusperforatus (Gyllenhal)

The annual summer field meeting of the Dipterists Forum was held in Speyside in2008 and a number of coleopterists were present in the party. A personal target wasto gain some experience of the local specialities and Ciidae were an obvious target.Of the 21 native ciid species, 15 have been reported from the Scottish Highlandsand 10 of these were found during the week. Local specialities are Cis dentatusMellie, C. jacquemartii Mellie, C. lineatocribratus Mellie and Ropalodontusperforatus. None of these are listed in the British Red Data Book (Shirt, 1987) butHyman (1992) proposed RDB3 status for C. dentatus and R. perforatus, withNationally Scarce status for the other two Cis. C. dentatus is the rarest of these byfar (Carter & Owen, 1988; Orledge & Ewing, 2006).
