Intensive residue management can reduce yield lag — but not eliminate it. The continuous-corn yield penalty has yet to be solved. Decades of field trials throughout the Corn Belt show average yield losses of 10% to 20%, says Joe Lauer, a University of Wisconsin corn agronomist. But losses can be much greater in years with bad weather.
