Many medical journals indulge in a light-hearted issue at the end of the year, and the venerable BMJ is leader of the pack. This paper attempts to disprove the popular myth that orthopaedic surgeons are physically stronger but less intelligent than their medical colleagues, who in this case are anaesthetists. Although it no doubt caused boisterous exchanges across the green drapes of operating suites worldwide, it is interesting to consider what lies behind these occupational stereotypes, and what medical students make of the teasing that they witness.
