YOUR pancreas, resting within your abdominal cavity just behind your stomach, is a very important organ. Not only does it participate in digestion, but it also is an active member of your endocrine system. When you eat something sweet, your pancreas is told to secrete the hormone insulin, which in turn instructs the glucose to move out of the bloodstream and into the cells. Once the blood sugar levels drop, the pancreas stops its insulin secretion until the blood sugar levels are allowed to climb upto normal. In this way, a healthy body is able to regulate its sugar levels through a finely tuned, responsive, dynamic system of positive and negative feedbacks. Honey bee foraging organization functions in a very similar way. The colony is faced with the task of effectively and efficiently exploiting the landscape's most profitable resources, and it does so through a series of finely tuned, responsive, dynamic positive and negative feedbacks.
