MY INITIAL EXPERIENCE OF FEDOR LAZUTIN'S BEEKEEPING CONCEPT

IWAS introduced to Fedor Lazutin's hive and its management through being invited to review his Keeping Bees with a Smile for BKQ (No. 114). I was impressed by his largely natural beekeeping method: minimal interference, no sugar feeding or acaricides,and colony/ queen reproduction by natural swarming. His double-walled insulated hive design- based on a long, deep, cavernous trough- suggests that colonies in it would be well shielded from the extremes of environmental conditions more prevalent in eastern Europe where trough hives are more common. To me, only Lazutin's use of foundation seemed to depart from naturalness, but it understandable because of the huge tall-format Dadant-width frames of his hive.
