A research group of Prof. K. Toshima et al. at the Institute of Molecular Cytobiology, the University of Tokyo, have succeeded for the first time in the world in analyzing the 3-d structure of the calcium pump for sarcoplasmic reticular using beam lines of "Spring-8," large-sized radial ray equipment. By the analysis of the 3-d structure, it has become possible to clarify the junction of "phosphoramvan" where the motion of the pump is brought to a stop. As a result, it has become possible to promote the development of six types of medicines for myocardial infarction and similar diseases which are caused to happen when the pump is brought to a stop. Furthermore, it may become possible in the near future to develop a medicine that is effective for arresting the advancement of cancer.
