The Senate Environment and Public Works committee has passed a bill that would overhaul the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), the frst Congressional vote on TSCA since the 1976 law took efect. The bill, sponsored by Senator Frank Lautenberg (D., NJ), is a "major milestone in our efort to fx America's broken system for regulating toxic chemicals," Lautenberg says. The legislation passed today contains substantial changes to the prior version of the bill, including a revised process for prioritizing chemicals and streamlined data submission requirements. It also alters provisions related to exemptions for substances requiring confdential business information protections, and sets out a revised process for approving new chemicals.
