Arch’s Fourth-Quarter Net Income More Than Doubles

Arch Chemicals reported net income of $6.2 million in the fourth quarter 2010, more than double income in the year-ago period. Sales rose 6%, to $311.7 million. Arch’s HTH water products unit reported an operating loss of $600,000, compared with breakeven results in the 2009 quarter. Profits were hurt by a charge related to a duty claim in France. Sales rose 7%, to $126.2 million, on higher volumes and favorable foreign currency exchange rates, partially offset by lower selling prices in Latin America. Its personal care and industrial biocides unit posted income up 33%, to $14 million, on sales up 1%, to $76.4 million. Higher volumes, particularly for biocides used in building products, were mostly offset by lower selling prices.
