Leather handles for tools have been around for a long time. They offered extra comfort and vibration/impact absorption in the days before modern synthetic handles were introduced. A notable example still available in many hardware stores is the Estwing range of hammers, with layers of leather strung on a steel core (Photo. 1).Some woodworkers, including turners, like to fashion their own tools, either adding a turned handle to store-bought chisels, gouges and knives, or even doing the metalwork themselves, producing their own blades.
