The gavel appears to be a fairly simpie exercise but it can be a challenge to both beginner and long time turners (Photo.1). The reason for this is that the gavel head has very close detail which has to be reproduced as a mirror image on both ends. Because these mirror image shapes are positioned so close together, if you make the slightest slip or change in the width or diameter of any of the shapes, it will really stand out. There is the consolation that there is only one gavel head to the set — if you have a slip on one of the shapes, you do have the option of modifying the other side to match. The striking plate is 72mm in diameter. This is probably smaller than the average striking plate you'll see, but I consider it big enough to do the job and a lot easier to store.
