Weaned calves attract premium at Hamilton

Once again it was a case of weaned calves attracting a premium at the Landmark/Elders sale at Hamilton on 6 January. In a strong yarding of 3500 quality Hereford and European breed cattle, those that had been weaned generally attracted a 10c/kg premium with prices hovering around the 200c/kg mark for the majority of the yarding, back about 20c/kg on last year's sky high prices. On a liveweight basis, the top price of 226c/kg was paid for two pens, 70 Hereford steers (298kg) from the Pepper family, Lochredal Part, Tahara, Vic, bought by Paul Mason, Wellington, NSW, for backgrounding, and 28 Charolais steers from Jubb Farms, Mortlake, weighing 276kg. Top per head price of 762 dollar was paid for 14 Charolais steers, weighing 362kg from Delamere Pastoral, Willaura.
