Duodenum-preserving local excision of a gastrointestinal stromal tumor presenting with duodenal bleeding.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are preferentially located in the stomach and small intestines, whereas the duodenum is an unusual location. Duodenal GISTs are very rare and constitute only 4 per cent of all GISTs.2 Unlike cancers, GISTs do not widely infiltrate and rarely metastasize to lymph nodes.3 If technically feasible, local excision is acceptable. However, because of the complex anatomic structures, tumors in the second portion of the duodenum are a challenging clinical entity. In this report, we present a rare case of GIST located in the second portion of the duodenum, which was successfully treated with local excision.
