ChemChina (Beijing) on 23 September filed a request with the European Commission for antitrust approval for its $43-billion acquisition of Syngenta. The commission is expected to decide by 28 October. It can either clear the deal, with or without concessions, or it can open a full investigation if it is concerned ChemChina's takeover of the largest agricultural chemicals producer could harm customers and competitors. In August, ChemChina and Syngenta received clearance from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States for the proposed combination, which was viewed as a major hurdle to the transaction.
