Evonik Industries says it is doubling capacity for the feed amino acid L-lysine at Blair, NE. The two-phase expansion will lift capacity to 280,000 m.t./year by August 2012, six months earlier than originally projected. The company says it has good co-operation with Cargill, the site operator, which supplies Evonik with locally manufactured over-the-fence raw materials. Evonik uses biotechnology to produce the essential amino acids L-lysine, L-threonine, and L-tryptophan, used as animal feed. "This investment further strengthens our significant market position in the feed additive business," says Klaus Engel, CEO of Evonik Industries. The company recently announced plans to construct a new plant, which will expand its DL-methionine capacity to 580,000 m.t./year, and the doubling of L-lysine capacity will add further growth to its biotech-manufactured amino acid L-lysine.
