Teijin To Enter High-Performance PE Market With New Plant in Europe

Teijin says it will enter the high-performance polyethylene (HPPE) market by building its first production facility at Emmen, the Netherlands, due onstream in the second half of 2011. Teijin aims to grow its HPPE business quickly, targeting a global market share of 15%-20% by 2015. HPPE, which is usually in the form of fibers or tapes, is produced with ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene polymers, and has a wide range of applications, including in reinforced plastics, protective materials, ropes, nets and medical materials, Teijin says. Teijin’s Teijin Aramid (Arnhem, the Netherlands) and Teijin Techno Products (Osaka, Japan) subsidiaries have been developing HPPE production processes and products in their respective research facilities at Arnhem and Iwakuni, Japan. Teijin currently produces limited amounts of HPPE at pilot plants in the Netherlands and Japan. Teijin has decided to move forward with the commercial production of HPPE, as these subsidiaries have established viable mass-production technologies and new production processes.
