Horiba's Kawamura-san is optimistic that the testing requirements on internal combustion engines won't keep rising forever: "Maybe in five years automotive manufacturers will need to measure more parameters for R&D purposes. After that, we can probably decrease all the parameters," he says. By that time, perhaps fuel cells will be taking the place of ICEs in the lab: the equipment to test them is already out there, he reveals. "The engine dyno part of the cell is the same, but we have to provide a kind of gas blender system to provide the fuel. These fuel-cell evaluation systems are being sold in Japan today."
