Sabic to close cyclohexane, benzene plants in UK

Sabic’s 195,000-m.t./year cyclohexane unit at Wilton, UK, will close at the start of 2017 because a change in the feedslate of the accompanying steam cracker will end benzene extraction operations at the site. In 2014, Sabic followed Ineos and Borealis by announcing an upgrade for the 865,000-m.t./year cracker at Wilton that would enable it to run the unit on ethane imported from the United States alongside the plant’s current feeds. As the cracker feed lightens, the production of pyrolysis gasoline reduces. This will cut the availability of feed for Sabic’s benzene extraction unit, which provides the feed for the cyclohexane plant.
