Some reflections on china, US-Chinese relations, and healthcare in China

During recent years, I have made a number of trips to China, Taiwan, and Korea on behalf of the publisher of The American Journal of Medicine, Elsevier, which has cospon-sored a number of Asian continuing-education programs aimed at promising young clinical investigators.The goal of these programs in China is very clear. The Chinese government has gained world respect in a number of areas, for example, economics and athletics. Now, the Chinese would like to be respected for performing world-class clinical research. A goal often expressed to me in China is the desire to see a Nobel Prize in medicine and physiology come home to China in future years. I think this goal is one that the Chinese should be able to achieve. They have a large number of bright, highly motivated, and ambitious young academic physicians already in the early phase of their research careers. In addition, the central government has been generous in providing funding for equipment and personnel.
