Tyre tread compounds filled with silica instead of carbon black help reduce fuel consumption by up to 5% and improve traction and handling.However,silica tyre treads have been difficult to manufacture.Since silica is not miscible in rubber,its dispersion is more difficult than carbon black.To keep the silica stationary within the compound,it must be chemically coupled to the rubber.
