A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE EFFFECT OF DIFFERENT COMPOSTS ON QUALITY COCOON PRODUCTION OF SILKWORM UNDER RAINFED CONDITION OF WEST BENGAL

摘要

A bioassay study was conducted with the leaves obtained from four different types of composts namely cowdung as control, weed, vermicompost and rearing waste compost under rainfed condition to assess the efficacy of the composts on cocoon characters and reeling parameters. The study revealed that vermicompost contributed better performance in respect of most of the important economic characters of rearing and reeling. Thus, it is confirmed that the application of vermicompost in mulberry is more effective and beneficial towards waste recycling and eco-friendly point of view, in addition to the improvement in quality of leaf and cocoon production and reeling characters. Hence, the technology of vermicompost preparation can be recommended to the farmers which can be made by their own for mass adoption in West Bengal both for rainfed and irrigated too.
