Illustrative Case: A Patient With Large Arteriovenous Malformation

Large arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) pose a significant challenge to the neurosurgeons. Management of large AVMs often requires multimodality treatment strategies employing combinations of embolization, microsurgery, and radiosur-gery. Embolization is used as an adjunct to microsurgery, but is not usually effective for radiosurgery. For large AVMs where effective radiosurgical dose cannot be given in a single session, prospectively staged (volumetric) radiosurgery is an attrative option. The technique and outcome of staged radiosurgery for patients with large intra-cranial AVMs is discussed.
