A US Congresswoman who is fiercely supporting Usec's effort to win a $2 billion loan guarantee from the Department of Energy (DOE) is trying to torpedo Areva's chances of win- ning the award based on a connection the French company has with Sudan. "It has been brought to my attention that the Department of Energy's favorable consideration of Areva's loan guarantee application could constitute a violation of the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act of 2007," said an Oct. 23 letter from Rep. Jean Schmidt, an Ohio Republican, to Energy Secretary Steven Chu. If it's true that the US government can't do business with Areva without violating the divestment law, it could affect all of Areva's contracts with the federal government, not just its loan guarantee application.
