The aim of this article is to establish the principles involved in developing active veterinary participation in controlling health, production and welfare on the modern dairy farm - active dairy herd health management. The intention is to set up a 'cyclical' plan involving all the necessary steps in herd management, with the aim of delivering sustainable structured participation with the herd. This should be clearly distinguished from farm assurance, which has the aim of producing a set of written protocols for the benefit of a milk buyer but unfortunately in many cases does not deliver the active involvement we desperately need to make real improvements ,in health and production as described here.
