North Queensland gas pipeline

The Queensland Government's Cleaner Energy strategy is showing results with the planned commencement of a new gas pipeline from the northern Bowen Basin region to Townsville. Construction of the Enertrade pipeline will start in September this year and be completed in late 2004. Enertrade, as part of a consortium with CH4 Pty Ltd and Transfield Townsville Pty Ltd, won the right to provide a gas-fired, base load power station in north Queensland following a competitive selection process. The project will see the existing Transfield-owned Townsville Power Station at Yabulu converted to a combined cycle operation using natural gas as its fuel. Enertrade is a Queensland Government owned corporation. This combined cycle operation will recover waste heat through a steam turbine and increase the station's output to 220 megawatts (MW). At the same time, it will reduce the rate of carbon dioxide emissions by 500 000 tonnes each year when the station is used in place of coal-fired generation.
